AED (Automated External Defibrillator)

An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a portable electronic device used to diagnose and treat cardiac arrhythmias, which are irregular heart rhythms. An AED is designed to deliver a shock to the heart in order to restore a normal rhythm.

The steps for using an AED are:

  1. Turn on the AED: Most AEDs will turn on automatically when opened, but some may require you to press a power button.
  2. Attach the pads: Peel the adhesive pads off the backing and place them on the bare chest of the person in need of treatment, following the instructions on the pads.
  3. Analyze the heart rhythm: Press the analyze button on the AED to determine if a shock is needed.
  4. Clear the area: Make sure no one is touching the person or the equipment, and instruct everyone to stand clear.
  5. Deliver the shock: If the AED advises a shock, press the shock button, and the AED will deliver the shock automatically.
  6. Continue CPR: After the shock, continue performing CPR with compressions and breaths until EMS arrives.

It’s important to remember that an AED is not a substitute for CPR, and CPR should be performed in addition to using an AED. If you are not trained in the use of an AED, it’s important to seek proper training from a certified organization like the American Heart Association or the Red Cross.
