Bharat Bazar was established in 1974 by Hira and Veena Birla with the mission of making South Asian ingredients more readily available. They observed that the growing community in the Bay Area was having a difficult time finding authentic Indian groceries. Hira and Veena started importing ingredients directly from India and packaging them by hand. Shortly thereafter, they opened the first Bharat Bazar in a modest 2,000 square foot location in Santa Clara and stocked the shelves with a wide variety South Asian groceries. Our community finally had a place where they could find all the authentic ingredients they needed.
