Objective:
The objective of the game is to knock down a stack of seven flat stones (pittu) with a soft ball (usually made of cloth) and then try to rebuild the stack while the opposing team attempts to eliminate players by hitting them with the ball.
Players:
The game is usually played between two teams, but it can also be played with multiple players on each side. There is no strict limit to the number of players, but it is best played with at least four players (two on each team).
Setup:
- Stack seven flat stones (pittu) on top of each other in a vertical column.
- Decide on the boundaries of the playing area. This area should be large enough for the players to move around freely.
Gameplay:
- Toss: One team starts by tossing the soft ball (usually made of cloth) towards the stack of stones to knock them down.
- Striking: The team that tossed the ball will try to hit the scattered stones with the ball to displace them even farther.
- Rebuilding: While the stones are scattered, the team that tossed the ball will try to rebuild the stack of stones as quickly as possible.
- Defense: The opposing team, which is in the field, will attempt to retrieve the ball and hit the players of the tossing team with the ball while they are trying to rebuild the stack.
- Scoring: Players from the tossing team who are hit by the ball are considered “out” and have to leave the playing area. The team that tossed the ball scores points based on the number of stones they successfully stack up before all their players are eliminated.
Winning:
The game is usually played in multiple rounds, with teams taking turns to toss the ball. The team that scores the most points by successfully rebuilding the stack and avoiding being hit wins the game.
