Massachusetts State Senator Mike Moore has introduced legislation, SD.130, to recognize Diwali, the Festival of Lights, as an official state holiday. The bill seeks to honor the cultural and spiritual significance of Diwali, celebrated by millions worldwide and cherished by the diverse communities of Massachusetts.
If enacted, the proposed law would designate the 15th day of the Hindu lunisolar month of Kartik as Diwali Day. It would require the governor to issue an annual proclamation, officially recognizing the holiday and its universal message of light overcoming darkness, fostering unity, and inspiring reflection.
Community leaders have expressed strong support for the proposal. Anand Sharma, a prominent advocate for cultural recognition, has urged residents to take action by contacting their state legislators and endorsing the bill. “Your voice matters. Reach out to your state senator and representative to show your support for this meaningful legislation,” he emphasized in a Change.org petition created to rally public backing.
If the bill passes, Massachusetts would join a select group of states in officially recognizing Diwali as a public holiday, celebrating the state’s vibrant cultural diversity. Earlier in 2024, Pennsylvania made history as the first U.S. state to declare Diwali a public holiday, setting a precedent for cultural acknowledgment nationwide.
