Indian Industry Must Join the Journey Toward a Developed Nation: Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran

India’s path to becoming a developed nation — or ‘Viksit Bharat’ — requires collective commitment, and industry must play a central role in this transformation. This was the message delivered by Mr. N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, while speaking at a symposium organized by the Indian Foundation for Quality Management (IFQM).

Mr. Chandrasekaran emphasized the need for quality and excellence in both manufacturing and services, urging Indian businesses to align themselves with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of inclusive and sustainable growth.

A Call for Excellence

According to Mr. Chandrasekaran, India must be globally recognized for producing products and services that meet the highest international standards. This requires developing an ecosystem that includes all stakeholders — from large corporations to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) — to ensure sustainable progress across the economy.

Navigating Global Challenges

He also noted that India’s growth journey is taking place amid global headwinds such as:

  • Macroeconomic instability
  • Geopolitical conflicts
  • Supply chain disruptions
  • Workforce mobility challenges

Despite these hurdles, he stressed that industry participation is crucial as the government rolls out key reforms aimed at strengthening infrastructure, boosting manufacturing, and driving economic development.

Role of MSMEs in Nation-Building

Underscoring the importance of MSMEs, Mr. Chandrasekaran called for raising their level of excellence to make India’s manufacturing sector more competitive. MSMEs, he said, are key to maintaining the momentum toward achieving the vision of a developed India by 2047
