Karthika Pournami

🌕 Karthika Pournami Festival – The Divine Light of Devotion

Karthika Pournami, also known as Tripuri Purnima or Deva Deepavali, is one of the most sacred and vibrant Hindu festivals celebrated on the full moon day (Pournami) of the Karthika month (October–November). This festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It holds deep spiritual significance in both Shaivite and Vaishnavite traditions.

🌸 Significance of Karthika Pournami

According to Hindu mythology, Karthika Pournami marks the day when Lord Shiva destroyed the demon Tripurasura, symbolizing the destruction of ego, ignorance, and evil. Hence, the day is also called Tripuri Purnima.

In Vaishnavism, devotees worship Lord Vishnu and Lord Kartikeya (Murugan), offering prayers and lighting lamps to honor divine energy and spiritual purity.

🔥 Rituals and Traditions

  1. Lighting of Lamps (Deepa Danam):
The highlight of Karthika Pournami is the lighting of oil lamps (deepams) around temples, homes, and water bodies. It’s believed that lighting a lamp on this day brings divine blessings and removes negativity.

  2. Temple Visits and Fasting:
Devotees observe fasting or partial fasting and visit temples dedicated to Lord Shiva or Lord Murugan. Special pujas, abhishekams, and deepa archanas are performed.

  3. Holy Bath:
Taking a sacred bath in rivers or temple ponds, especially before sunrise, is considered highly auspicious. The Ganga Snanam or Karthika Deepa Snanam is believed to cleanse one’s sins.

  4. Karthika Deepam Festival in Tamil Nadu:
In Tiruvannamalai, a huge fire lamp is lit atop the sacred Annamalai hill. Thousands of devotees gather to witness this divine sight, symbolizing Lord Shiva as an infinite light (Jyoti).

  5. Dev Deepavali in Varanasi:
In the holy city of Kashi (Varanasi), the ghats of the Ganga are illuminated with millions of diyas, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that marks the festival as Dev Deepavali — the “Festival of Lights of the Gods.”

🌿 Spiritual Essence

Karthika Pournami is more than just a celebration — it’s a spiritual awakening. The lighting of lamps represents the illumination of the inner self, dispelling ignorance and nurturing knowledge and compassion.

It’s a time to engage in charity, meditation, and devotion, reminding us that divine light always triumphs over darkness.
