Amul to sell ‘fresh milk’ for the first time in United States

To sell “fresh milk” in US East Coast and Midwest markets, Amul has partnered with the Michigan Milk Producers Association.

This is the first time that Amul’s brand of “fresh milk” will be available in the US in its history of milk cooperatives in India.

In order to sell “fresh milk” in the US East Coast and Midwest markets, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the umbrella organisation for milk cooperatives in Gujarat that markets and sells milk under the Amul brand, has partnered with the Michigan Milk Producers Association.

“For the past 25 years, we have been exporting milk products to the US market. On the other hand, this will be the first time we sell fresh milk under the Amul brand in the United States. The managing director of GCMMF, Jayen Mehta, told BusinessLine, “We anticipate this to be a game-changer.”

“A few days ago, during the 108th annual general meeting of the Michigan Milk Producers Association, we made the announcement of our entry into the US market in front of board members. Among the top 10 cooperatives in the US, they have been in operation for 108 years. Mehta, who attended the March 20 announcement, stated, “Our products will complement their products.”

According to the GCMMF official, Amul could access markets in Chicago, Dallas, and other locations on the US East Coast thanks to the strategically located dairy plant of the Michigan Milk Producers Association in Ohio. The members of the US dairy cooperative are from Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan.

In the US, Amul will introduce its line of fresh milk under the Amul brand in one-gallon (3.8 litres) and half-gallon (1.9 litres) packs. Among them are Amul Gold, which has 6% milk fat, Amul Shakti, which has 4.5% milk fat, Amul Taaza, which has 3% milk fat, and Amul Slim, which has 2% milk fat. Mehta continued, “The composition of these fresh milk products will be the same as it is in India.” Amul ships milk products to more than 50 nations worldwide. These products will be available in leading Indian grocery stores throughout the East Coast and Midwest markets of the US.

Mehta continued, “We have not decided how much milk we will sell in the first year yet. Amul products, like cheese, butter, pander, ghee, ice cream, drinks, chocolates, Gulab Jamun, rosogolla, mithaimate, amulya, frozen snacks, prawns, lassi, and buttermilk, are already being exported into the US through distributors in New Jersey, New York, and other places. In addition to being designated as a “trading house,” GCMMF is the biggest dairy exporter from India. Tanzania, Ghana, Mozambique, Haiti, and the Republic of the Congo were added to the list of export markets by the GCMMF, which also reported a more than 20 percent increase in exports last year.
