Baisakhi

Baisakhi is a festival celebrated in the Indian state of Punjab and among the Sikh community worldwide. It falls on April 13th or 14th every year and marks the beginning of the solar new year and the harvest season.

On Baisakhi, people in Punjab and Sikh communities worldwide visit Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) to offer prayers and seek blessings for the new year. They participate in Nagar Kirtan (a religious procession) and perform Bhangra and Giddha (folk dances) to the beats of Dhol (a musical instrument).

Baisakhi is also significant for Sikhs because it marks the founding of the Khalsa Panth, a Sikh community of initiated members, by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. On this day, people also read the Guru Granth Sahib (the holy book of Sikhism) and share Langar (a community meal) with each other, regardless of their caste or social status.

Baisakhi is a joyous festival that symbolizes new beginnings, unity, and brotherhood. It promotes the values of community, equality, and service, and it is celebrated with enthusiasm and fervor by the people of Punjab and the Sikh community worldwide.
