The best way to understand this dance for.m, three syllables that make up its name

Bha ( bhava or expression)

Ra ( Raga or melody)

Ta ( Tala or rhythm.)

When we combine all these three segments, Bharatanatyam thus consists of

“Nritta ” (a rhythmic dance form)

” Natya” ( Dance with a dramatic aspect)

” Nritya “(an amalgam of Nritta and Natya)

It became an important part of South Indian Temples around 300 BCE to CE. Temple dancers are called ” Devadasis” who was dedicated to Lord Shiva, performing the dance form and becoming an important part of rituals in South Indian temples.

In Sanskrit, Bharatanatyam means Indian dance and is believed to have divine origin.

In Hindus religious traditions, Brahma created Bharatnatyam as a form of entertainment and communication that could be understood by all, as some people were unable to understand the scriptures. Contemporary classical dancers of Bharatnatyam are both male and female. it is considered a sacred ritual that is spiritually uplifting for both audience and dancer.

Mallika Sarabhai, Yamini Krishnamurthy, Savita Sastry, Padma Subramanyam, and  Rukmini Devi Arundale, are famous classical dancers of Bharatnatyam.

Eminent Bharatanatyam dancers like Arundale and Balasaraswathi expanded the dance form out of Hindu Temples and established it as a mainstream dance form. Today, this ancient classical dance form also includes technical performances as also  non-religious and fusion-based themes.
