CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is a special type of BLS technique used to resuscitate a person from cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart stops beating or beats irregularly and cannot pump blood effectively. Without blood flow, the brain and other vital organs can be rapidly damaged, leading to serious health complications and even death.

CPR combines chest compressions with ventilation to  restore blood flow and oxygenation to the brain and other vital organs. Chest compressions are done by using the hands to press firmly on the patient’s chest  to manually push the heart out and circulate the blood. Artificial respiration provides oxygen to the patient by inhaling through the mouth or nose. This restores normal breathing patterns and improves oxygenation.

CPR can be performed by trained medical professionals or by lay persons with appropriate training and certification in CPR techniques.
