The stupa is one of the major attractions in Sarnath and is closely associated with the life of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. It is believed that the Buddha delivered his first sermon, known as the “Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta” or “Turning the Wheel of Dharma,” to his five disciples at this site after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya.
