Sam Evans is a professional tabla player who studied tabla in India with some of the greatest masters of the tradition, holds a Masters degree in tabla performance and is a regular international performer. He is the founder of the Melbourne Tabla School, a lecturer at Monash University in Indian and world music where he co-founded and directs the 20-piece World of Music Orchestra. After spending a decade studying tabla in the traditional Guru-Shyishya environment with tabla master Pandit Anindo Chatterjee in India, Sam studied with the famous tabla master Ustad Zakir Hussian in America. Sam has performed live on Indian televison and has performed across North India as a tabla soloist as well as accompanist for ‘A Grade’ artists of traditional North Indian music and his music has been featured in recordings alongside Ravi Shankar, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Nitin Sawheny. The Melbourne Tabla School offers individual and group tabla lessons to people of all ages, levels and backgrounds. Lessons are held Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11am to 9pm and are held in both Carlton and Hawthorn. The school presents regular student concerts, hosts visiting artists and offers beginners hire tabla sets.
