It was established in the year 1971 under private management body of Patliputra Medical College at Ashok Raj Path, Patna. Henceforth the government of Bihar transferred the college to district Dhanbad and attached Sadar Hospital (PMCH- Patliputra medical college cum hospital ) , further it was expanded with various cluster campus, which added SSLNT hospital Purana Bazaar at Dhanbad, and Central Hospital at Jagjeevan Nagar Dhanbad.
Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College (snmmc) medical college cum hospital extended up to 60 acres (24 ha) of land at Saraidhela mauja /landmark), Dhanbad. The Buildings were constructed for the medical college that is successfully functioning since 1977, and the hospital attached started rendering its services to the community between 2001 to 2002 with a capacity of 560 beds approx. It was recognized by Medical Council of India (MCI) in 1999. Currently from 2023 the annual admission in UG (M.B.B.S.) course is for 100 seats .
