Eye allergy

Eye allergies, also known as allergic conjunctivitis, occur when the eyes react to allergens such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, or mold. The body releases histamines in response to these allergens, leading to inflammation and irritation of the conjunctiva, which is the thin membrane that lines the inside of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye.

Symptoms of eye allergies may include:

  1. Itching or burning sensation in the eyes
  2. Redness and swelling of the eyes
  3. Watery eyes
  4. Sensitivity to light
  5. Blurred vision
  6. Grittiness or feeling of something in the eye

There are several treatment options available for eye allergies, including:

  1. Avoidance of allergens: Try to avoid exposure to the allergen that triggers your allergy symptoms.
  2. Over-the-counter medications: Antihistamine eye drops, such as ketotifen, can help relieve itching and redness.
  3. Prescription medications: Your doctor may prescribe stronger medications such as corticosteroid eye drops, which can help reduce inflammation and swelling.
  4. Immunotherapy: In severe cases, immunotherapy, such as allergy shots or sublingual immunotherapy tablets, may be recommended to desensitize your body to allergens over time.

It’s important to see an eye doctor if you experience persistent eye allergy symptoms or if you have any concerns about your eye health.
