Eye infection

An eye infection is a condition in which the eye or surrounding tissues are infected by harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. It can occur in one or both eyes and may cause a range of symptoms, including redness, itching, burning, pain, discharge, and blurred vision.

Some common types of eye infections include:

  1. Conjunctivitis: Also known as pink eye, it is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, a thin membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. Conjunctivitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses, allergies, or irritants.
  2. Keratitis: It is an infection of the cornea, the clear outer layer of the eye. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites and may lead to corneal ulcers, scarring, and vision loss.
  3. Blepharitis: It is an inflammation of the eyelids, typically caused by bacteria or a skin condition such as seborrheic dermatitis or rosacea. Symptoms include redness, swelling, itching, and crusting around the eyelids.
  4. Endophthalmitis: It is a rare but serious infection that occurs inside the eye, usually following surgery or trauma. It can cause severe pain, vision loss, and even blindness.
  5. Orbital cellulitis: It is an infection of the tissues surrounding the eye, usually caused by a bacterial infection from the sinuses or teeth. It can cause swelling, pain, fever, and impaired vision.

Treatment for eye infections may include antibiotics, antiviral or antifungal medication, and supportive care such as warm compresses, artificial tears, and avoiding contact lenses or eye makeup. It is important to seek medical attention promptly if you suspect an eye infection to prevent complications and ensure proper treatment.
