Sonia Raman, the first Indian American woman to serve as an assistant coach for an NBA team, has joined the New York Liberty’s coaching staff, the reigning WNBA Champions announced on January 13. Raman, who spent four seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies (2020–2024) and contributed to three postseason appearances, will now work alongside head coach Sandy Brondello’s staff.
“We are thrilled to welcome Sonia to New York as we gear up to defend our title in 2025,” said Brondello in the team’s press release. “With her expertise in offensive strategy, she brings invaluable experience to our staff and aligns perfectly with our core principles as we continue to evolve.”
Raman’s move to the Liberty comes after she was previously considered for the head coaching role with the Chicago Sky in 2023, as reported by The Next basketball newsroom. Although she was interviewed, the Sky ultimately hired Teresa Weatherspoon. According to The Next, Raman’s addition to the Liberty staff signals a commitment to enhancing the team’s defense of their first-ever championship title. With a background in analytics and a strong basketball mindset, she is expected to challenge and support Brondello’s team, especially in high-pressure situations.
Before joining the NBA, Raman made her mark as head coach of the MIT women’s basketball team from 2008 to 2020, where she became the program’s winningest coach. Off the court, she also served a two-year term on the Coaches Council for the Alliance of Women Coaches beginning in September 2017.
Born in Framingham, Massachusetts, Raman played for and graduated from Tufts University with a degree in international relations. She later earned her juris doctor from Boston College Law School.
