Gananam Tvam
Introduction: This sacred mantra is usually chanted at the beginning of all Vedic chants. This powerful chant in the Rig Veda is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the Remover of all Obstacles. “Ganapathi” means Leader of the people (gana -“group of people”, pati – “Father, Lord”).
The full text of the Gananam Tvam, along with a brief explanation of its meaning is given below:
“Ganaanaam Twam Ganapathi Gam Havaamahe
Kavim Kaveenaam Upamasra Vastamam
Jyeshta Raajam Brahmanaam Brahmanaspatha
Aanashrunvanna Oothibhi Seedha Saadanam”
Meaning: We invoke You, who are the Leader of the Ganas, the Wisest among Scholars, the Poet of poets, the Illustrious One, the Supreme king of mantras, the Protector of the mantras, who listens to the devotee’s prayers. I invite Lord Ganesha to visit my home with prosperous things and be seated here.
Significance: The Om Ganaanaam Tva mantra is chanted by devotees early in the morning to attune their minds and bodies to the natural daily cycle. This mantra is chanted to empty the mind of accumulated negativity. It refreshes the brain and primes it to receive the gift of knowledge.
