Fall (of Wicket):

The batting team’s score when a batter gets out, abbreviated to “FOW” on scorecards.

Farm the Strike (Shepherd the Strike or Farm the Bowling):

Batter contriving to face the majority of balls bowled, often ensuring even runs to retain strike against specific bowlers.

Fast Bowling:

Bowling style delivering the ball at high speeds, often over 90 mph (145 km/h). Fast bowlers may also use swing.

Fishing:

Batter tempted into reaching for wide deliveries outside off-stump, often resulting in a miss.

Five-Wicket Haul (Five-For or Fifer):

Bowler taking five or more wickets in an innings, a significant achievement.

Flamingo Shot:

A flick shot played by Kevin Pietersen, flicking deliveries from outside off-stump through mid-wicket.

Flash:

Aggressive batting, often hitting good deliveries indiscriminately.

Flat Pitch (Flat Deck):

Advantageous to batters, offering predictable bounce, little help for bowlers.

Flat Hit:

Powerful aerial shot appearing flat due to high speed.

Flat Throw:

Fielder’s throw almost parallel to the ground, considered good if accurate.

Flat-Track Bully:

Batter performing well only on batting-friendly pitches, struggling under challenging conditions.

Flick:

Gentle movement of the wrist to guide the ball, commonly associated with leg-side shots.

Flight:

Delivery thrown with an arched trajectory by a spinner, a skillful bowling technique.

Flipper:

Leg spin delivery with under-spin, bouncing lower than usual, invented by Clarrie Grimmett.

Floater:

Spinner’s delivery with a highly arched path, appearing to ‘float’ in the air.

Fly Slip:

Fielding position between slips and third man.

Follow On:

When a team bats again immediately after batting second and being made to follow on by the opposition due to a significant first innings lead.

Follow Through:

Bowler’s body actions after releasing the ball to stabilise their body.

Footmarks:

Rough patches created by bowlers’ feet on the pitch, becoming abrasive, affecting ball movement for spinners.

Footwork:

Batter’s necessary foot movements to face deliveries comfortably and negate spin or swing.

Form:

Quality of a player’s recent performances; being ‘in form’ means recent good performance, ‘out of form’ means struggling.

Forty-Five (on the One):

Fielding position akin to short third man, halfway between the pitch and the boundary.

Forward Defence (Forward Defensive):

Common defensive shot with the batter’s weight on the front foot, played with a straight bat close to the pad, preventing a catch.

Four:

Shot reaching the boundary after touching the ground, scoring four runs.

Four Wickets (4WI):

Bowler taking four or more wickets in an innings.

Fourth Stump:

Position or line one stump’s width outside the off stump; often refers to the corridor of uncertainty.

Free Hit:

Penalty given when a bowler bowls a no-ball, allowing the batter to face without fear of dismissal.

French Cut:

Unintentional shot resulting in an inside edge narrowly missing the stumps.

Front Foot:

(of a batter) Foot closest to the bowler in the batting stance.

(of a shot) Played with the batter’s weight primarily on the front foot.

(of a bowler) Last foot to contact the ground before releasing the ball.

Front Foot Contact:

Position of the bowler when their front foot lands during the bowling action.

Fruit Salad Bowling:

Bowling different types of deliveries rather than a consistent style to confuse batters.

Full Face of the Bat:

Hitting the ball with the front, flat side of the bat, indicating a well-played shot.

Full Length:

Delivery pitching closer to the batter than a good length but further away than a half-volley.

Full Pint:

When a stump is knocked completely out of the ground by a delivery.

Full Toss:

Delivery reaching the batter on the full without bouncing, often considered a bad delivery.

Furniture:

Another term for the stumps.
