In a landmark development for India’s digital infrastructure, Google has announced plans to establish a 1-gigawatt (GW) hyperscale data centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The project is expected to generate approximately ₹10,000 crore (US$ 1.13 billion) in revenue for the state, according to Union Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Mr. Pemmasani Chandrasekhar.
Massive Investment and Employment Boost
With an estimated investment of ₹1,33,215 crore (US$ 15 billion) spread over 2026–2030, this will be one of Google’s largest infrastructure projects in India. The data centre is projected to create 5,000–6,000 direct jobs and 20,000–30,000 total employment opportunities, catalyzing growth across the technology, construction, logistics, and service sectors.
The facility will include state-of-the-art infrastructure, high-capacity power systems, and advanced cooling technologies, designed to meet the demands of modern cloud computing and artificial intelligence workloads. The project is expected to have a significant multiplier effect on Andhra Pradesh’s economy, attracting further investment and enhancing its reputation as a digital powerhouse.
India’s First Gigawatt-Scale Data Centre and AI Hub
The Visakhapatnam facility will be India’s first gigawatt-scale data centre and also serve as Google’s inaugural Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub in the country. This milestone positions Andhra Pradesh at the forefront of India’s transition into a data-driven and AI-enabled economy.
The announcement was made during the Bharat AI Shakti event in New Delhi, attended by several key dignitaries, including:

During the event, Mr. Kurian emphasized the strategic significance of the project, highlighting its role in supporting India’s growing demand for cloud services, AI innovation, and digital transformation.
