Andal was born in South India in the 8th century and is said to have been found as a baby girl under a Tulsi (basil) plant by a temple priest. She grew up in the temple and is said to have had a strong devotion to Lord Vishnu from a young age. She wrote a collection of hymns called the Tiruppavai, which are recited during the Hindu festival of Margazhi (December-January). Andal is considered a symbol of devotion and is worshipped as a deity of love and devotion in her own right. Her devotion to Lord Vishnu and her embodiment of divine love continue to inspire devotees and she is widely revered in the Hindu tradition.
