How Can NRIs Register to Vote in India

NRIs (Non-Resident Indians) who wish to register to vote in India can do so by following the below steps:

  1. Check Eligibility: Ensure that you are an Indian citizen and are 18 years of age or above. NRIs who hold Indian citizenship are eligible to register as voters in India.
  2. Online Registration: Visit the website of the Election Commission of India at https://voters.eci.gov.in and click on the “Apply online for registration of overseas voter” link. This will take you to the VOTERS’ Service Portal.
  3. Form 6A: Fill out Form 6A – Application for Registration of Overseas Electors. This form is specifically for NRIs who wish to register as voters in India. Provide accurate information about your Indian passport, address in India, and other required details.
  4. Required Documents: Prepare the necessary documents to support your application. The documents may include a copy of your valid Indian passport, proof of residence at the overseas address, and a passport-sized photograph.
  5. Submit the Application: Upload the filled Form 6A and the supporting documents on the VOTERS’ Service Portal website.
  6. Verification: After submitting the application, the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) will review the information and documents provided. If all the details are found to be correct, your registration as an overseas voter will be approved.
  7. Communication and Inclusion: Once your registration is approved, you will receive a communication from the ERO. Your name will then be included in the electoral roll of the constituency mentioned in your application.

Please note that NRIs can only register to vote in one constituency in India, and they are required to be physically present in that constituency to cast their vote during elections. There is no provision for online voting or voting through postal ballots for NRIs at the moment.

It’s essential to stay informed about any updates or changes in the registration process by regularly checking the Election Commission of India’s official website or consulting the nearest Indian diplomatic mission (Embassy/Consulate) for guidance.
