Indian Navy Day

Navy Day in India is celebrated on December 4th every year to commemorate the achievements and role of the Indian Navy in protecting the country’s maritime borders and interests. On this day in 1971, the Indian Navy launched a surprise attack on Pakistan’s main port of Karachi during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. This action was successful in crippling Pakistan’s naval capabilities and played a key role in India’s eventual victory in the war.

To mark the occasion, various events and ceremonies are held across the country, including parades, ceremonies, and wreath-laying at war memorials. The President and Prime Minister of India traditionally pay their respects to the sacrifices made by naval personnel. The Indian Navy also holds an exhibition of its capabilities and achievements, which is open to the public.

The Navy Day is celebrated in all the major naval bases, ships and establishments across the country, where the commanding officers of the establishments and ships are presented with various awards for their achievements and contributions to the Indian Navy.

The Indian Navy is headed by the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) who is the highest-ranking officer in the Indian Navy. Chief of the Naval Staff at the moment is Admiral Karambir Singh.
