The dream of becoming an independent republic turned into reality on 26th January 1950 for India. Our nation celebrates Republic day with pride and dignity paying respect to the soldiers on this day who have laid down their lives for our cherished citizens to breathe with peace on our soil.

The main event for the holiday is a massive parade held in the capital of New Delhi, which includes cultural, historical, and military displays. The parade is preceded by the prime minister laying a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti — an arched war memorial — and taking a moment of silence to commemorate fallen soldiers.

  • Republic Day Parade:

The famous Republic day parade in New Delhi is held by the Ministry of Defense. The Parade is the main attraction of Republic day that lasts up to three days. The Parade is performed to pay tribute to the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Country.

Importance Of Republic Day Parade

  • Unfurling the National Flag:

The tricolour flag is unfurled fervently on this day, each colour’s significance reinforcing the values of strength, courage, peace, truth and auspiciousness into the fabric of our being.  The crowd cheers in pleasure when the hovering helicopters shower rose petals on them when they fly past the celebration arena. 

  • Honouring and felicitation:

After the parade, different regiments of armed force, police, home guards and national cadet crops do a march past. Children who won the National Bravery Awards take a ride on the colourfully decorated elephant and are honoured for performing outstanding deeds for bravery and selfless sacrifice. President of India addresses the nation in a wonderful speech on the evening of the Republic Day celebration. 

  • Cultural events:

The National Folk dance floats weave their magic and enthral the audience every year around this joyous occasion. Students throughout the country perform various cultural activities in their respective schools and other educational institutions.  All the performances pay respect to our country’s achievements and achievers. Indian classical dances, yoga performances, acrobats, drills and other activities are displayed to showcase the skills the school is honing in its students.  Prizes are given away by the chief guest and the day ends for enthusiastic students on a happy note!

**About Beating Retreat Ceremony:

The Beating Retreat Ceremony takes place every 29 January at the Vijay Chowk which marks the end of a four-day-long Republic Day celebration.  The ceremony is performed by the bands of the three wings of the military- the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force. The chief guest of this function is the President of India who arrives escorted by the PBG, a cavalry unit. After the President arrives the PBG commander asks the unit to give National Salute followed by National Anthem by the Army.

Republic day recharges the patriotic feeling of safeguarding the country’s interests – be it economic, social, cultural or environmental for a nation equipped with health, success and happiness.
