Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a type of work authorization in the United States for international students who have completed or are in the process of completing a degree program at a U.S. educational institution. The purpose of OPT is to allow international students to gain practical work experience in their field of study in the United States.
OPT is authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and is available to students in certain science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, as well as other eligible fields of study.
To be eligible for OPT, international students must be in lawful F-1 student status and must have completed a degree program. They must also obtain an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from USCIS and must have a job offer from a U.S. employer.
OPT is available for a limited time period, typically for 12 months for most students and 24 months for STEM students who have completed a degree from a U.S. institution accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
OPT is not a permanent immigration status and does not lead to a green card. However, it can provide valuable work experience and can help international students gain a better understanding of the U.S. job market and professional culture.
