Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Mauritius President Dharam Gokhool on Tuesday (March 11, 2025) to discuss ways to enhance bilateral relations. During his two-day state visit, Mr. Modi was conferred with The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius’ highest civilian honor.
Describing Mauritius as a bridge between India and the Global South, Mr. Modi emphasized that the island nation is not just a partner but an integral part of India’s extended family.
Mr. Modi’s visit began with a ceremonial welcome in Port Louis, followed by a sapling planting ceremony at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden alongside Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. He also paid homage at the ‘Samadhi’ of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the founding father of Mauritius, and that of former President and Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth. As a special gesture, he presented President Gokhool with sacred Gangajal from the Maha Kumbh.
