As the nation’s elections take place that will determine AI regulations, OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, has appointed Pragya Misra as the head of government relations, marking the hiring of its first employee in India, according to Bloomberg.

According to a Bloomberg report, a company backed by Microsoft Corporation has appointed Pragya Misra to supervise partnerships and public policy affairs in India. Misra, 39, brings expertise from her prior positions at Meta Platforms Inc. and Truecaller AB. It is anticipated that she will begin working at OpenAI by the end of this month.

As nations figure out how to regulate AI, the company’s new hire demonstrates that they are working to get favourable rules for the technology. India is a sizable market with enormous growth potential, but it is challenging because domestic businesses are protected by local laws.

According to Pragya Misra’s LinkedIn profile, she received her MBA from the International Management Institute in 2012. She graduated from Delhi University with a degree in commerce and the London School of Economics and Political Science with a diploma in bargaining and negotiations.

It was reported last year that OpenAI is collaborating as a senior advisor to help facilitate discussions with the government regarding AI policy with former Twitter India head Rishi Jaitly. According to the report, Jaitly has been assisting OpenAI in navigating the legal and policy environment in India.

In India, OpenAI also hopes to establish a local team.

Apart from a trademark that they obtained this month, OpenAI does not yet have an official presence in India. During his June visit to New Delhi as part of his global tour, CEO Sam Altman had a fruitful meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But during the two days of the visit, neither Altman nor OpenAI made any announcements.
