The 46-year-old Indian American is a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York and specialises in securities, contracts, bankruptcy, and regulatory matters.
Judge Sanket J. Bulsara is the nominee of President Biden to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. The 46-year-old, who is currently serving as the Eastern District of New York’s United States Magistrate Judge, is an authority on securities, contracts, bankruptcy, and regulatory issues. According to his profile, he has “presided over 400 settlement conferences, numerous bench and jury trials, and authored over 300 published opinions.” He became the first South Asian American federal judge to hold a position on any court in the Second Circuit when he was appointed to the position in 2017.
Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both Democrats from New York, are in favour of Bulsara’s nomination. “The epitome of the American Dream and a history maker,” Schumer said, describing him as a “first-rate legal mind and a dedicated, talented public servant.” Applauding the nomination was the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association as well. “At 4% of the population, the South Asian community in New York City is among the fastest growing,” stated Priya Purandare, Executive Director of NAPABA. “The importance of having a community representative on the judiciary is recognised by President Biden’s nomination, Senator Schumer, and Senator Gillibrand’s recommendation of Judge Bulsara.”
He was the Deputy General Counsel for Appellate Litigation, Adjudication, and Enforcement at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission since 2015, and prior to being appointed to the Eastern District of New York, he held the position of Acting General Counsel. Prior to that, he held associate, counsel, and partner positions at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr L.L.P.
He worked as an associate at Munger, Tolles & Olson L.L.P. in Los Angeles, California, and as a Special Assistant District Attorney at the Kings County (Brooklyn) District Attorney’s Office for six months in 2007 and 2008. He worked as the Southern District of New York U.S. District Court Judge John G. Koeltl’s law clerk. He earned his A.B. (magna cum laude) from Harvard College in 1998 and his J.D. (cum laude) from Harvard Law School in 2002.
He was born in the Bronx, New York, to Kenyan and Indian immigrants. The family later moved to New Rochelle and Edgemont, New York. His mother was a nurse, and his father was an engineer for the City of New York. At the moment, Bulsara and his spouse, Christine DeLorenzo, reside on Long Island.
