Vishu

Vishu is a festival celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala, usually in mid-April. It marks the beginning of the Malayalam New Year and is celebrated as a harvest festival.

On Vishu, people in Kerala wake up early in the morning and visit the temple to offer prayers. They then view the “Vishukkani,” which is an arrangement of items like rice, coconut, fruits, vegetables, and flowers that are kept in front of the deity. It is believed that viewing the Vishukkani on the first day of the year brings prosperity and good fortune for the rest of the year.

Another important aspect of Vishu is the giving of “Vishukkaineetam,” which is a token amount of money given to children and elders as a symbol of blessings and good wishes.

Traditional Malayalam dishes like “Vishu Kanji” (rice porridge), “Thorana” (stir-fried vegetables), and “Mampazha Pulissery” (mango curry) are prepared for the Vishu feast. The festival is also celebrated with fireworks and cultural events.

Vishu is an important festival for the people of Kerala, and it symbolizes new beginnings, prosperity, and good fortune.
