The Vishwa Shanti Stupa was constructed to promote peace and non-violence in the world and to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of the Buddha’s Mahaparinirvana (passing away). It was inaugurated in 1992 by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and is one of the major attractions for visitors to Sarnath.
