Sohini Sinha, an Indian American FBI special agent, has been appointed assistant director of the FBI’s Victim Services Division. Before this role, she served as the special agent in charge of the Salt Lake City Field Office.
Sinha joined the FBI in 2001, shortly after the 9/11 attacks, and has spent over two decades handling both domestic and international threats. Speaking to FOX 13 News in November 2023, she recalled being “one of only six female trainees out of 50” at the FBI Academy. Despite challenges, she remains committed to upholding the agency’s integrity, stating, “We speak through our work. We do the right thing, the right way—it’s about the rule of law and the rigor of our investigations.”
Born to a Hindu father from India and a Methodist mother, Sinha credits her parents’ story with shaping her resilience and approach to overcoming challenges.
Her FBI career began at the Milwaukee Field Office, where she worked on counterterrorism investigations. She later took on temporary assignments at Guantanamo Bay, the FBI Legal Attaché Office in London, and the Baghdad Operations Center. In 2009, she was promoted to supervisory special agent in the Counterterrorism Division in Washington, D.C., overseeing extraterritorial investigations involving Canada and liaising with Canadian law enforcement.
In 2012, Sinha became an assistant legal attaché in Ottawa, working with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service on counterterrorism initiatives. Three years later, she transferred to the Detroit Field Office as a field supervisor, leading international terrorism investigations.
Her career trajectory continued with a shift to cyber intrusion investigations in 2020, followed by a promotion to assistant special agent in charge of national security and criminal matters in the Portland Field Office. In 2021, she was selected as the executive special assistant to the FBI director.
Before joining the FBI, Sinha worked as a therapist and later as an administrator for a nonprofit mental health clinic. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in mental health counseling from Purdue University.
